Barton Grange Garden Centre celebrates 50 years

Barton Grange Garden Centre which is owned and run by the Topping family from Preston celebrated 50 years in business on Friday 10th May.

The Garden Centre was started by Eddie Topping in May 1963 when he opened a ?garden shop? on the grounds of his parents? hotel in Barton. Little more than a shed in those days, the Garden Centre now occupies a massive site at Brock and has been named Garden Centre of the Year for the past two years.

Since opening, the Garden Centre has employed hundreds of local people, some of whom have been with the company for over thirty years or even forty years.

Eddie Topping was in the Garden Centre on Friday 10th May with his sons, Peter, Ian and Guy, to meet customers and?and celebrate the fifty years in business.

Peter, the eldest son, oversees Barton Grange Landscapes, middle son Ian runs the Barton Grange Hotel and youngest son, Guy, oversees the garden centre business. Guy himself led the building of the new Garden Centre at Brock, which was officially opened in June 2008 by HRH the Princess Royal.

Guy Topping believes the success of the business is down to the commitment and dedication of the staff. ?Obviously we aim to offer the highest quality across all our ranges and to keep changing and moving with the times.

?Above all though, it?s about customer service and we?re very lucky to have such a great team of staff. People get a really friendly Northern welcome when they come to Barton Grange and I think that means a lot to them and keeps them coming back.?

On reaching the fifty years, Guy said: ?It?s very special to be able to celebrate fifty years of the Garden Centre and particularly being able to see what it means to Dad, who started the whole ball rolling all those years ago. It must be amazing for him to see how it?s grown.?

There was a party atmosphere in the Garden Centre all day on Friday with live music and a special slideshow showing old pictures of staff and events over the years.
