BBC Gardeners? World Live sponsored by Lexus is a hotbed for emerging talent – nurturing new designers into the wonderful world of Show Garden design and encouraging communities to green up their environments with these two competitions specifically designed for the up-and-coming.
Unique to the show,?Beautiful Borders help horticultural students and budding gardeners to experience the design, planning and build of a horticultural exhibit?in a show environment, without the large financial and resource commitment of a Show Garden. Beautiful borders are judged for RHS medals, and are always a popular feature with visitors, their size enabling them to visualise ideas for their own gardens.
?Beautiful Borders are among my favourite gardens to judge as you see such creativity and novel ideas from these emerging designers. 2014 was a particularly strong year with 6 RHS Gold Medals, 10 Silver Medals including 7 Silver-Gilt and 2 Bronze being awarded. I?m looking forward to seeing if the 2015 show will, once again, raise the bar? Jon Wheatley, RHS Judge
And new for 2015, the show launches its Window Box Competition, to showcase the huge public interest in container gardening ? a versatile, practical and cost effective way for everyone to get growing. The Window Box Competition is open to all West Midlands-based gardeners, gardening groups and professional horticulturalists. The aim of the display is to inspire visitors, revealing how you can brighten up even the smallest spaces or inner-city streets through imaginative container planting, both decorative and edible. The window boxes will be judged by BBC Gardeners? World Magazine editor Lucy Hall and award-winning garden designer and journalist James Alexander-Sinclair.
?Window boxes are all about putting on a show, right on your own doorstep, so this competition will bring out the creativity in everyone taking part. Interest now in container gardening is huge, and these displays will demonstrate its appeal and versatility ? I can’t wait to see the entries? says Lucy Hall. “The magazine team will also be creating a demonstration area in the heart of the show where visitors can learn the secrets to successful container gardening, so every visitor will go away from the show full of ideas for pots and boxes ? and confident they’ll get it right.”
Deadline for applying for the Beautiful Border competition is Monday 16 Feb 2015 and the deadline for applying for the Window Box competition is Monday 09 March 2015.
