With longer days approaching fast and warmer weather on the way, the gardeners work begins in earnest this month.
Dahlias are an invaluable cut flower for the end of the summer and early autumn. Their architectural, jagged leaves add texture to borders and their wax-like blooms come in a variety of shapes and colours. Purchase Dahlia tubers from Notcutts now and start them off by planting in pots of peat or general purpose compost. The plants should be grown on in a cold green house or sun room and planted into borders or the cutting garden towards the end of May, where they will flower for months and give excellent value.
Make sure that you have a supply of hazel twigs or other supports ready to stake peas once they have begun to grow away. Early varieties such as ?Meteor? can be sown in the open ground this month.
The flower garden and the allotment will be busy places this March!
