Dobbies research shows Christmas 2020 more meaningful to almost half of 25-34 year olds

The build up to Christmas is underway with Brits making plans to bring joy to the 2020 festive season. New research from Dobbies shows that Christmas is going to be more meaningful for many, with almost half (45%) of 25 to 34-year olds agreeing that Christmas will mean more to them in 2020 than ever before.

The research, which was undertaken by Censuswide, also shows that those in the 25 to 34-year-old age group are planning on going all out when it comes to decorating, with almost half (49%) agreeing that they plan to make their house more festive than years before.

According to the research, there are many things that spark joy at Christmas but none more so than giving gifts to friends and family. In fact, 36% of people surveyed claimed giving gifts gave them most joy closely followed by eating Christmas food at 35%. Just over a quarter (26%) said that watching festive movies and listening to Christmas music brought seasonal joy.

When it comes to the festive tree, 25% said decorating it brought them most joy at Christmas. Over a quarter (29%) of those who plan to put their Christmas tree earlier in 2020 said they plan on putting their tree up a month earlier than usual. And, it appears the younger generation are particularly keen with over two in five (46%) of those aged 16 to 24 planning on putting their Christmas tree up earlier than years before.

The research showed that there was a real split when it came to Brits’ views of Christmas must-haves. Presents came out tops with 40%, followed by Christmas lights at 33% and the all-important turkey at 32%.

Christmas films were an essential for almost 2 in 5 (39%) women surveyed compared to 24% of men and the traditional Christmas card was high on the list of essentials for nearly a third (32%) of the respondents aged over 55s, but important to just 14% of 16 to 24-year-olds.

The research comes as Dobbies Christmas shop is now open online and in-store.

The sales trend to-date shows Christmas decorations and lights performing proving popular with customers. Lynsey Abbott, Christmas buyer for Dobbies, said: “We have ensured our stores are geared up to make this year’s festive preparation as magical as possible. We’ve enhanced our range of indoor and outdoor decorations to ensure customers have plenty of choice when it comes to making their homes feel festive. Likewise, our tree selection across our stores will be plentiful as we recognise Brit’s desire to get their trees up early. Our teams are working hard to ensure Dobbies is not your average garden centre shopping experience this Christmas.”
