Helping to take the back ache out of gardening are Mid-Wales company Elite Concrete with the launch of their range of timber-look concrete sleepers.
The sleepers come in two colours ? saddle brown and pewter grey, are ideal as raised-bed planters, creating patios or retaining walls and have a number of significant advantages over traditional timber sleepers. They can also be used by developers, landscapers and construction companies.
They are made of high-strength concrete, reinforced with steel bars and have a six tonne load bearing capacity, making them stronger than timber sleepers. They require less maintenance, will never rot, warp or splinter and there is no need for wood preservatives.
Elite concrete?s managing director, Scott Williams said: ?Our timber-look sleepers are extremely versatile. We hear so much these days about taking the strain out of gardening so they are ideal for constructing raised beds in either flower or vegetable gardens.?
The company estimates that their concrete sleepers will last at least three times longer than timber and also have a number of environmental benefits ? there?s no danger of leaking harmful chemicals from treated timber into groundwater; timber sleepers can release five times more carbon into the atmosphere over a 60-year period and concrete sleepers can be recycled.
A variety of sizes are available ? their standard-size sleeper is 230 x 75 x 1750mm and weighs approximately 65kg and they have also developed a system for building up retaining walls and garden planters.
