Fire breaks out at Long Ditton garden centre

Parakeets and chameleons are among the 73 animals that have been saved from flames after a fire broke out at a Long Ditton garden centre.

The incident closed part of the Kingston Bypass throughout the night and into Friday morning (July 17).

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said it sent eight appliances to Hill Park Roses in Woodstock Lane North, Long Ditton, after receiving a call at 11.43pm on Thursday (July 16).

On Friday morning, four appliances remained at the scene dealing with the incident.

According to traffic and travel service Inrix, part of the Kingston Bypass (A309) was closed due to the fire. It later reopened.
