Floramedia helps Tumbelina? reach young techno-gardeners

Floramedia is helping plant breeders David and Priscilla Kerley bring their Petunia Tumbelina? Priscilla to the attention of younger, techno savvy gardeners while also enhancing the plant?s colour label (October, 2013).

The horticultural design and print company was challenged to find a way of engaging with a new greenfingered generation. It has delivered an innovative web application for Petunia Tumbelina? Priscilla.

David, who runs the partnership Kerley & Co with his wife Priscilla and son Tim breeding novel patio plants, said: ?We wanted to find a way to support growers and retailers and help drive sales.

?There is only so much information that can be featured on the label and using technology in this way enables us to start engaging with the consumer, in particular younger gardeners who are used to using this kind of technology in other areas of their life.

?We want to give ideas, inspiration and reassurance and make the buying process less bewildering.?

The Floramedia designed web application has the look and feel of an app, but it is actually a set of web pages that have been specially designed to be viewed on a smartphone or tablet.

It is accessed via a QR code that will be featured on the label and other marketing material and features inspirational images and information to aid the buying decision, as well as regularly updated care tips that customers can refer to throughout the growing season.

Floramedia?s Managing Director, Nick Mathias said: ?We were delighted to win this exciting new project and our experience with FloraLinQ put us in good stead. We have created a web app that is simple, concise and easy to use.

?Moving forwards it?s clear we need to find a way to help growers and retailers engage with new younger gardeners who want to create a ?look? and find inspiration and detailed practical information quickly and web apps are one tool that we see being used increasingly in other areas of retail.

?The QR code is available to retailers and licensed growers of Priscilla, who wish to feature it in their own marketing materials, contact your Floramedia representative for more information.?

Nick added: ?This project with Petunia Tumbelina? Priscilla comes at a time when research shows more and more young people are becoming interested in gardening and that they are significant spenders.

?A study commissioned by the moulded plastics company, Stewart, found gardeners in their late 20s are the biggest spenders on gardening products. The survey revealed 25 to 34-year-olds spend ?300 per year, 35 to 44-year-olds ?240 and those aged 55 plus just ?200.

?This emerging market relies heavily for its information and guidance on technology and that?s why developments such as the Petunia Tumbelina? Priscilla app are so important.?

Floramedia is consistently at the forefront for introducing new and innovative ideas. It also has a picture library with more than 250,000 images that are available for garden centres to use to create their own marketing materials.
