Groen-Direkt celebrates Spring Fair success

In this, their 19th year of trading, the Groen-Direkt series of Plant Fairs never fails to please. This year’s Spring Fair drew a strong audience of buyers from Europe on its first day (Feb 3). With 150 stands and 10 new exhibitors, the format to this plant fair is now a proven winner.

Visitors came from as far as the Ukraine, Italy and Spain. The hospitality offered to all visitors with respect to drinks and food (including mini Dutch pancakes) is second to none.

UK Buyers in force

Alan Beaumont is M.D. at Greenfingers nursery in Warwickshire. ‘My day in Holland as always a sociable experience. The biggest value at Groen Direkt is being able to catch up with so many growers in one place. As as a result we ordered some really good stock which is the second big benefit. I am still a believer that we buy from people not computers. The sample fair side of it is a great way to buy if you are a retailer but expensive in the main for a wholesale. However it is a great shop window for what is current and well worth the walk round for that. I always get tempted by one or two batches!’

Bare root samples

Lodders Nursery provided bare root samples which is new for the event. The range of specialist rock plants from Erik de Boer also caught the eye. These sedum plants are sold throughout Europe to both retail plant centres and to the landscape professional. The Ilex ‘Dark Green’ is always an attractive plant and Guy Henderieckx from Oprins reported strong interest.

Garden Trends for 2015

These were highlighted within the event including mini garden designs. ‘Ready-made’, ‘Edible’, ‘Free nature’ and ‘Blue is the colour’ themes were all beautifully created. This is another aspect of the event that sees the future. Vegetable plants, Tomato plants and peppers were also to the fore as the consumer continues their interest in ‘Grow your own’.

The full calendar of events for 2015 is available as an A3 poster or detailed on the website.
