Memorial garden wins top awards at Taunton Flower Show

Staff from Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre are celebrating this week (August 4, 2014) after scooping a large gold medal and ?Best in Show? for their WW1 memorial garden at the Taunton Flower Show.

The garden centre won the accolades during the event at Vivary Park in Taunton on Friday, August 1 for its memorial garden to commemorate those who lost their lives during the First World War.

Andrew Pitman, Plant and Duty Manager at the award-winning, independent, family-run garden centre at Monkton Heathfield, said: ?Our garden scooped a large gold medal and the Bill Cridland Memorial Trophy for ?Best in Show? for the third year running and we?re absolutely delighted.

?The garden is a tribute to war heroes and features a memorial obelisk, donated by Redwood Stone, as well as traditional planting using hardy perennials, shrubs, bedding and David Austin roses.?

A ?Peace? rose giveaway was also part of the garden. People were able to put their names down along with the name of a relative or loved one they lost during either the first or second world wars or any other conflict to receive one of 500 roses the garden centre was giving away. Five hundred people will be picked at random later in the month to receive a rose.

All of the names the garden centre collected will then be added to a special memorial page on its website.

The garden also received a visit from VIP gardener Toby Buckland who was in attendance at the show.

Andrew added: ?Anyone who would like to find out more about our show display garden can come along to a free talk on the topic during our monthly Gardeners? Group tomorrow (August 5).

?I will be discussing some of the themes and ideas, which were on display at the Taunton Flower Show and how people can apply them to their own gardens.

?The session starts at 11am on Tuesday, August 5. Meet at our Pondside Caf?. The talk will last for approximately 45 minutes. The first 50 people to attend the talk will be offered the chance to take home a free one litre shrub from our starter range worth ?3.99.?
