Survey reveals confidence in Christmas sales

The Barclays Christmas Survey 2015 has revealed that confidence is high in the retail sector as the Christmas period approaches. The research shows that 77% of retailers are more confident this year compared to last year, and 79% are expecting their revenue to increase.

The results also revealed that 56% expect the biggest sales growth to come from mobile sales, while the delivery channel to experience the largest growth will be click and collect with a 25% increase on the previous year.

Looking at specific sectors, retailers identified electricals as the category most likely to see the best growth this Christmas, followed by beauty and health, and luxury products.

Ian Gilmartin, head of retail and wholesale at Barclays, commented: ?It?s our 3rd?year compiling the Barclays Christmas Survey and the results are more positive than ever. The overwhelming confidence around prospects for the whole Christmas season is great to see.?

However, when retailers were asked to identify the biggest threat to success this Christmas, 41% selected logistics stress, with 23% selecting IT failure. Despite these worries, three quarters of retailers questioned are expecting to see increased website traffic on Christmas Day itself, with more than half expecting traffic to peak after 8pm.
