Sweet Success at RHS Garden Harlow Carr

  • National Sweet Pea Show coming to Harrogate 11 ? 12 July
  • Features top growers from the National Sweet Pea Society
  • Includes sweet pea tours, competition & awards presentation

Top sweet pea growers from up and down the UK will travel to Harrogate through the night on Friday 10 July in preparation for a weekend-long show celebrating the beauty and fragrance of sweet peas.

This prestigious national competition ? now in its second year at RHS Garden Harlow Carr ? will take place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 July (10am ? 4pm). The National Sweet Pea Show promises visitors to the Royal Horticultural Society?s northernmost garden a riot of colour and a wealth of breath-taking scents.

The show is run by the National Sweet Pea Society and will see a mix of sweet pea growers entering in more than 70 classes. Judging will take place on Saturday morning and visitors will be able to view the prized blooms from 10am onwards.

After the judging takes place, visitors will be able to enjoy the breath-taking sights and scents of the awe-inspiring display, made up of hundreds of vases of sweet pea blooms from a wide range of cultivars. The awards presentation will take place at 2pm on the same day and visitors are welcome to watch.

Paul Cook, Curator at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, says: ?We?re delighted to once again be hosting this wonderful show by the National Sweet Pea Society.

?Sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus)?are probably the most popular annual flower we grow at Harlow Carr. The unique scent and colour are favourites with our visitors and the show is a chance for them to see the cream of this year?s sweet pea crop under one roof.?

Bob Rishworth, Show Organiser says: ?The setting up and staging of the show is no small undertaking. Growers come from all corners of the UK, many travelling overnight, spend many hours creating displays, but the hard work is all worthwhile when you see dozens of presentation vases filled with beautiful blooms and take in the heavenly scents.?

As well as the display, tours of Harlow Carr?s sweet pea displays will be running across the weekend at selected times. The tours are an opportunity to learn more about the different varieties and hear expert advice on how to grow your own at home.

The National Sweet Pea Society will set up an advisory stand and display, helping visitors with questions and advice about growing and exhibiting. Bunches of surplus blooms and seeds will also be available to buy, allowing visitors to take home a piece of the show.
