STAFF at one of the UK?s leading commercial nurseries has this month (July, 2014) presented a cheque for ?5,225 to Greenfingers.
The team at Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford raised funds for the charity, which creates gardens at children?s hospices, by taking part in a 30 mile sponsored walk.
Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, explained: ?We are so pleased that we have raised ?5,225 for the charity. We thought our final total was ?4,500 but people just kept donating after the walk, which was fantastic. Our initial aim was to raise ?1,000 so we are delighted to have smashed our target.
?The charity does such fantastic work creating and improving the gardens at children?s hospices, which are invaluable to the families that use them.
?The Mortimer Trail walk took us through the stunning Shropshire and Herefordshire countryside from Ludlow to Kington. It was a real challenge for us due to the weather conditions. We tackled torrential rain and thunder and lighting.
?It took us 15 hours to complete and we were all shattered come the end. It was a great team building exercise and we are glad that we all managed to finish it together. We are already planning to raise more cash for Greenfingers again next year.?
The charity was launched in November 1998 by a group of volunteers drawn from all sectors of the gardening industry.
Growers, plant breeders, retailers, manufacturers and a host of gardening journalists and celebrities have willingly contributed materials, time and expertise to create gardens at children?s hospices around the UK. To date Greenfingers has created 43 gardens.
Sarah Lioveri, Fundraising and Finance Officer atGreenfingers, said: ?We are thrilled Wyevale Nurseries has given such a large donation to Greenfingers.
?This money will make a significant contribution to our work creating magical gardens at children?s hospices nationwide.?The gardens are designed to help the children and their families and friends during a very emotional and difficult time.?
Wyevale Nurseries is one of the largest family-run wholesale nurseries in the UK. It was established in 1928 by Harry Williamson, a horticulturist and entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who sadly passed away in 2011.
The Williamsons? saw the opportunity to sell their product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres, followed by a chain. In 1987, the retail side needed to expand and the 19 garden centres were sold as a PLC.
The family then turned its focus to Wyevale Nurseries Ltd. It continues to be a family-run business with ownership and joint chairmanship currently being held by the third generation, Heather and Simeon Williamson, with plans for the fourth generation to takeover in the future.
Wyevale Nurseries has a significant product range and is regularly introducing new plants. It offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners.
